Electrical Component FAQs

Q

We are an auto parts store and we would like to improve our sales of electrical parts to the ag / industrial markets but there doesn’t seem to be a very good application guide available, printed or electronic. This leaves us with frustrating point of sale situation. Please advise.

A

A common dilemma that many stores encounter. A good sales habit to follow is good communication with your customer that includes asking for information about the application.. any numbers from the old unit…engine ID ..voltage ….tooth count ..model year. manufacture. Go to ASAP Links with your data and/or call your ASAP customer service rep for assistance.

Q

I just installed a remanufactured generator and it does not seem to charge. Does it need to be polarized and what is the procedure?

A

A “no charge” situation on a new installation is very common and is simply remedied with the following procedure. Using a jumper wire ( 16 gauge or larger ) momentarily touch (not to exceed 2 seconds) the armature terminal and the battery terminal of the regulator.

Q

We are always confused on the issue of starter rotation..cw or ccw. Is there an easy way to determine this?

A

Yes, by viewing the drive gear from the drive end of any starter, pick out a drive tooth that is in the 12 o’clock position as you view it. If the chamfer is on the left of the tooth, it is a right hand CW drive. If the chamfer is on the right, it is a left hand drive CCW.

Q

We sold a replacement starter for our customers OTR truck and he is reporting that the solenoid is sticking in the engaged position and the truck will not start. Is the starter or solenoid defective?

A

It sounds like low voltage to the solenoid. In this instance low battery Voltage will cause the solenoid movable contact disc to weld itself to the stationary contacts. Solutions to this problem are to maintain fully charged batteries and to consider installing an IMS ( integral magnetic switch ) that will improve solenoid operation under low voltage conditions.
